Mr. Williams
Dear All,
By the time you receive this email, I will have penned and tendered my resignation from the “incredibly professional community” of Wego High School—taking serious liberties with that conjecture. I was offered a position in international education back home in Israel that I would be a fool not to take. (I actually get to work at my youngest daughter’s school!)
As you go into the next year, I wanted to provide some insights into the unnecessarily rocky road that was the counselling department over the course of this past admissions cycle. For anyone in the office I forgot, I do apologise; I could not find your email address, but hopefully enough people have received this correspondence to get the discussion rolling.
As Mr. Meier had also included his thoughts for teachers and leadership, I am trying to avoid any overlapping information unless it is strictly necessary for context. Also, I was initially going to go the same route that Mr. Meier did, with separate letters for teachers, leadership, and students, but I think a mass email to everyone should suffice for the sake of brevity. As such, while this was initially geared towards IEP instructional staff alone, it will provide context for everyone, and I have tried to address a few useful suggestions for students at the end. Hopefully this will aid you in your working relationships with the Wego counselling department should you have the misfortune of working with it in the coming academic year. Here goes:
- Wego’s Priorities
Wego leadership prioritizes boosting its “top track” students (e.g. Ivy League hopefuls) often at the expense of others.
To create 1–2 Ivy admits per year, leadership has adopted questionable and sometimes unethical practices.
- Fraud Issues
2.1 Submitting documentation on behalf of teachers
Cialfo allows counselor staff to upload teacher reference forms if the teacher fails to.
This led to a case where a teacher’s name was used without consent, which is unacceptable.
2.2 Editing student submissions
Diana and Jonathan edited and sometimes wrote documents for students.
Several applications (9 at time of writing) are now under university audit. If found fraudulent, the student—not the staff—will be held accountable.
2.3 Aggressive changes to staff LORs
Mr. Meier wrote high-quality letters, but Diana blamed his letters for poor ED results.
She attempted to override his work with her own fabricated LORs—even forcing him to submit them.
Some of Diana’s letters showed signs of being AI-generated and included repeated phrases.
This fraudulent behavior has reportedly caused multiple universities to greylist or blacklist Wego.
- Reporting to Universities
Wego provides inconsistent and misleading information between domestic and international programs.
Some universities have already blacklisted the school.
- AP Exams and Chain of Command
Diana bypassed the IEP chain of command and used her influence to force decisions.
She claims to work “pro bono” in academia but lacks qualifications or work permits.
Disputes involving Diana are met with threats of firing or legal action.
- Diana’s Control Over Submissions
She insists on final say over students’ submissions.
She edits essays and pressures students to follow her instructions exactly.
- Handling of Disputes
Leadership covers up issues, insisting “no one will ever find out.”
Diana disappears during crises, only to return and blame others.
Mr. Meier’s wife was allegedly fired as scapegoat.
Damian himself was removed when audits began, despite being the most informed.
- Suggestions for Teachers
Require student request/consent before being listed as a recommender.
Always write your own LORs completely before submission.
Refuse if you don’t feel you can write a strong letter.
If in doubt about the counseling department, reach out to universities directly with the student’s info.
- Suggestions for Students
Know your recommenders – Understand their intent and communication style.
Don’t embellish – Over-exaggeration can backfire during admissions.
Avoid blind trust – Diana’s promises of Ivy acceptances were unfounded.
Be honest and specific – “Intellectual curiosity, resilience, and leadership” don’t mean anything if everyone says it.
Be upfront with values – Authenticity matters more than prestige.
Have fun – It’s a rollercoaster, so find moments to enjoy it. Also, coffee.
Hopefully this provides a decent foundation. Enjoy the next academic year and best of luck to all of you.
Cordially,
Damian Williams
P.S. For members of Wego leadership included in this correspondence, this email constitutes my formal resignation, effective immediately. I’ve already informed universities in my network of my departure. Any future use of this email to submit documents would constitute fraud. I’m in Haifa, Israel with my kids—time zones may delay responses.
With love and heavily audited finances,
~The Jews
